NIST SP 800-53 and SP 800-171: when US customers ask about controls
The US customer sends a contract with a DFARS clause and asks for the System Security Plan. What SP 800-53 and SP 800-171 require and how you use the evidence you already have.
NIST SP 800-53 is NIST's catalogue of security and privacy controls with 300 controls and 714 enhancements; SP 800-171 derives 97 requirements for protecting CUI from it. Neither is certifiable; both become binding through contracts with US agencies, their contractors and international groups.
The whitepaper explains baselines and tailoring, the CUI environment, the revision in the contract and the CMMC levels, System Security Plan and POA&M and the reuse of evidence from ISO 27001, NIS2 and NIST CSF, with a 10-step plan and a practice example.
